sanibel island eats

the mad hatter restaurant

Even though I’m a Floridian, I had never heard of Sanibel Island before visiting it. The Gulf is filled with a myriad of tiny islands that are scattered from the bottom of the peninsula to the top and that are all worth exploring. Sanibel was no exception and the besides how beautiful it was, the food was truly incredible.

Here are some of my favorite eateries that I got to try:

Thistle Lodge – this was the restaurant we chose to celebrate a birthday. Because we were arriving late to the island of Friday night, it was one of the few options that was open that late and truthfully it was my first choice when I did some quick research on the restaurant scene. The ambiance was Nantucket casual and the many windows provide guests with a prime viewing spot of the sea. The food was excellent and the were very accommodating of food allergies.

il cielo sanibel

Il Cielo – Beautiful and upscale, this Italian restaurant was a wonderful treat.
With an extensive wine list and live piano music, we had a few favorites in the table. I highly recommend the fresh fettuccini (I requested it without the shrimp and it was still amazing) and the heirloom caprese salad. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

The Mad Hatter – With a name like “The Mad Hatter” I was expecting something a little cookie when visiting this restaurant, instead we found a cozy, gourmet restaurant that serves dishes like Goat Cheese Pillows with a strawberry and port wine reduction and (for the meat eaters) Black Truffle Sea Scallops. reservations are highly recommended and to top the night off, the restaurant faces a beach with a sandbar so you can walk on the water right after dinner ?.

the lighthouse cafe sanibel island

The Lighthouse Cafe – This cafe boasts having the best breakfast in the world and I can vouch for how good the food is. They had the best fresh orange juice I’ve ever had. And although they’re known for their French Toast, (this was featured in Bon Appetit magazine), I was a particularly fond of the whole grain pancakes. (The granola one is especially delicious due to its texture and flavor combinations)
